چکیده

This paper investigates the perceptual significance of residual phase distortion due to an approximate equalization of the nonminimum-phase room response from a sound source to a microphone in a reverberant room. It is shown that disrupted phase relationships introduced by a minimum-phase equalization filter may have a detrimental effect on perceived sound quality. The subjective assessment of phase distortion on speech signals is related to an objective error criterion, newly introduced in this paper. An alternative approach to theminimum-phase/allpass decomposition based on iterative flattening of the room transfer function (RTF) magnitude is also presented, which overcomes potential numerical problems and providesmore insight into subjective aspects of magnitude and phase equalization in the reduction of acoustic reverberation. Factors contributing to the results and practical implications for equalization are discussed.

Equalization of Loudspeaker and Room Responses Using Kautz Filters: Direct Least Squares Design

DSP-based correction of loudspeaker and room responses is becoming an important part of improving sound reproduction. Such response equalization (EQ) is based on using a digital filter in cascade with the reproduction channel to counteract the response errors introduced by loudspeakers and room acoustics. Several FIR and IIR filter design techniques have been proposed for equalization purposes....

Inverse filtering of room acoustics - Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing [see also IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing], IEEE Tr

A novel method is proposed for realizing exact inverse filtering of acoustic impulse responses in a room. This method is based on the principle called the multiple-inputloutput inverse theorem (MINT). Because a room impulse response generally has nonminimum phases, it has been impossible to realize exact inverse filtering of room acoustics using previously reported methods. However, the exact i...

Coefficients - Delay Simultaneous Adaptation Scheme for Linear Equalization of Nonminimum Phase Channels

An efficient adaptation technique of the delay is introduced for accomplishing more accurate adaptive linear equalization of nonminimum phase channels. It is focused that the filter structure and adaptation procedure of the adaptive Butler-Cantoni (ABC) equalizer is very suitable to deal with a variable delay for each iteration, compared with a classical adaptive linear transversal equalizer (L...

Impulse Response Shortening for Acoustic Listening Room Compensation

The objective of this paper is to investigate the usability of channel shortening approaches known from data transmission for the equalization of acoustic systems. In setups for data transmission, the equalizing filter usually succeeds the channel, whereas in systems for the compensation of room acoustics it is placed in the signal path in front of the loudspeaker, which then acts as an acousti...

Results for Room Acoustics Equalisation Based on Smoothed Responses

Digital equalisation of room acoustics based on inverse filtering of measured response functions, introduces a number of theoretical and practical challenges. To overcome such problems, inverse filtering based on modified measured responses is proposed, derived via their complex Transfer Function smoothing, so that the processed responses are more perceptually compliant, of lower order and less...
